Getting to Fitzroy Island
Fitzroy Island is a stunning place that’s just a quick 45-minute ferry ride from the Cairns ferry terminal (Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal). It’s the closest Great Barrier Reef island you can visit from Cairns, making it easier to reach than Green Island.

Three ferry companies—Fitzroy Flyer, Sunlover, and Fitzroy Island Adventures—operate trips to Fitzroy Island.
The ferry times change based on the company. Most ferries run several times a day. They depart from the Cairns Reef Terminal, and it’s a good idea to get there about 20-30 minutes before your ferry leaves.

To start the hike, go to the main ferry wharf at Welcome Bay. From there, turn left past the beach cabins and walk behind the beach until you cross a small creek. You’ll soon see the camping ground.

Turn right here to find the hiking trail that leads up to Fitzroy Island Summit. The trail isn’t marked, but it’s easy to follow and well-kept.

The hike starts on a wide boardwalk through lush rainforest and then moves onto natural, rocky ground with roots. The climb begins gently but gets steeper as you go up, so take your time. Look out for local wildlife like the blue Ulysses butterfly and large skinks darting across the path.
As you continue, the trail opens up, and you’ll see the coastal woodlands and Coral Sea. Keep going, and you’ll catch views of Nudey Beach and Welcome Bay below. The summit will be in sight for the final stretch to the top.

When you get to the top, you’ll find a big viewing platform. From here, you can see all around the island in every direction. On a clear day, you can even spot the Frankland Islands and see the dark blue colors of the Coral Reefs on the outer Great Barrier Reef.

For the best views, try to hike up either at sunrise or sunset. This way, you avoid the hot midday sun and can enjoy a relaxing end to your day.
