Palm Beach Reef
Palm Beach Reef is the biggest coral reef system on the Gold Coast, with depths ranging from five to 25 meters. Here, you can swim above stunning, colorful corals and watch fish as they zip through the reef.
The reef’s top is just five meters below the surface, and there are plenty of rocky areas to discover. This dive site is for those who enjoy a bit of adventure—you might even see some larger fish, as stingrays and leopard sharks are known to hang out here.
Narrowneck Reef
Looking for a hidden snorkelling spot close to home? We’ve got just the place. Narrowneck Reef is an artificial reef located a short swim from the beach, nestled between Surfers Paradise and Main Beach.
Tangalooma Wrecks

Just an hour away from Brisbane, the Tangalooma Wrecks are one of the top spots for snorkeling in South-East Queensland. There are 15 shipwrecks that were purposely sunk some years ago to create a man-made reef, which has now become a home for lots of marine life.
You can expect to see turtles, wobbegongs, dugongs, and plenty of fish. If you’re interested in colorful coral, Flinders Reef is just five kilometers northwest of the island, boasting around 100 coral species and 200 fish species.
The Gold Coast Seaway
The Gold Coast Seaway is a top choice for local divers and snorkellers, offering three amazing spots to explore. The South Wall dive is perfect for beginners, starting from the shore at the Short Pipe and staying close to the wall.
If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of whaler sharks, head to the North Wall. The South West Wall is great for those new to scuba diving, with its gentle slope and calm waters. The warm water, abundant sea life, central location, and easy access make this spot a snorkeller’s paradise.
Kirra Reef
Kirra Reef is a top spot for snorkelling on the Gold Coast. It offers a similar underwater experience to Palm Beach Reef, but at Kirra, you get the fun of exploring from one rock to another.
You’ll probably spot smaller creatures like octopuses and cuttlefish, but don’t be surprised if you see larger ones too, such as stingrays and wobbegongs. It’s a good idea to bring an underwater camera because the view below the surface is simply stunning.
Scottish Prince Wreck

This isn’t your usual snorkeling spot—you’ll be exploring the wreck of The Scottish Prince, a 64-meter iron ship that sank 800 meters off Southport Spit in 1887. The ship was once filled with whiskey and linen, but now, only the hull is left.
Today, the wreck is covered in soft coral, attracting crayfish, sharks, tropical fish, rays, and even rare creatures like leafy scorpionfish. To reach this unique Gold Coast diving spot, you’ll need a boat.
Wavebreak Island
If you’re new to snorkeling, Wavebreak Island is a perfect place to begin. There are plenty of tours you can join to enjoy the beautiful underwater scenery, including a coral reef, in a relaxed setting.
To reach Wavebreak Island, you’ll need to take a boat. You can rent one from Surfers Paradise or the Nerang River to get there.
